A United Airlines flight from London to Newark encountered turbulence of a different kind when an “intoxicated” British passenger, Alexander MacDonald, aged 30, disrupted the journey, forcing an unscheduled landing in Bangor, Maine. The incident raises concerns about the challenges of managing unruly passengers on connected flights.
The Disruptive Episode
United Airlines Flight 883, en route to Newark, New Jersey, was diverted to Bangor on March 1 after MacDonald’s disruptive behavior.
Two passengers, both appearing to be “intoxicated,” drew attention, prompting law enforcement to remove them. The flight later resumed its course to Newark Liberty Airport after the incident.
Charges Faced by the Unruly Passenger
Court documents reveal that MacDonald faces charges of interference with the flight crew or attendant and assault.
His unruly behavior included yelling at a flight attendant and escalating to verbal and physical aggression. He reportedly threatened to “mess up the plane,” posing a safety risk to passengers and the crew.

Intervention and Flight Diversion
Efforts to calm MacDonald down proved futile, leading to his restraint with flex cuffs. The flight’s captain deemed the situation a threat to safety, prompting the decision to divert to Maine.
Law enforcement, including the Bangor Police Department,Customs and Border Protection, and the FBI, handled the situation upon landing.
Investigation and Future Flight Ban
The FBI, in collaboration with Customs and Border Protection, is conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident. United Airlines emphasized that MacDonald and the other unruly passenger would be banned from future flights with the airline as the company reviews the matter.
